Many of you have asked me questions about health insurance coverage for international students and their dependents. Below is a brief summary provided by the Student Health Insurance Office to help clarify the issue:
Mandatory Insurance Coverage
As you probably already know, health insurance is required for international students attending Penn State. If you have a spouse and/or children accompanying you to Penn State, they are required to have health insurance, too. You can meet this mandatory requirement either by purchasing the Penn State Student Health Insurance Plan (described below) or by demonstrating proof of insurance for you that meets all of the Penn State waiver criteria through an online waiver application. Dependent waiver applications must be completed at Student Health Insurance, 302 Student Health Center. The waiver standards can be found online here.
Penn State Student Health Insurance Plan
Penn State offers a student health insurance plan through Aetna Student Health. You can view the insurance plan brochure online at here. Enrollment is done online at Aetna Student Health. The Fall Semester enrollment deadline for this plan is September 10th.
Graduate Assistants/Graduate Fellows
If you are a graduate assistant or a graduate fellow (GA/GF), much of the cost of your health insurance plan is covered by your stipend. GA/GFs also are eligible for vision and dental coverage. The portion of the cost that you are required to pay is taken directly from your monthly stipend. Details about your premium subsidies, vision and dental coverage are available on this page of the University Health Services (UHS) website.
You can learn more about the student health insurance plan and the mandatory insurance requirement on the University Health Services (UHS) website here. The Student Health Insurance office at UHS is available to help you navigate the insurance process and answer your questions.
